As lines of communication have slowly opened up on the island of Puerto Rico, the Global Works family has been deeply saddened to learn that our partner community of Villa del Rio has been utterly devastated by Hurricane Maria. The community has yet to have been reached by disaster relief personnel and community members have been cut off from contact to neighboring towns and services, left to fend for themselves without the most basic of necessities.
It is time for Global Works to do what we do best: to act and to work alongside the residents of Villa del Rio to make both an immediate and an enduring impact.
One hundred percent of your generous donations made to our GoFundMe page will be placed directly into a Villa del Rio Community Fund to 1) provide the community with vital supplies and services to meet their most immediate needs (water, food, medicines, temporary shelter, etc.) and 2) address the more long-term infrastructural and community development challenges of rebuilding an almost unrecognizable community.
Global Works has been working in partnership with the people of Puerto Rico since our inception nearly 30 years ago. The small, mountainous community of Villa del Rio is located in the municipality of Vega Alta approximately 1.5 hours from the capital of San Juan. The rural town has graciously hosted numerous Global Works groups over the past 13 years who have worked in partnership with residents on community development projects centered upon the construction of concrete homes to replace those constructed of plywood. The town was founded by refugee families who had lost their homes following the devastation of Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Our commitment to the community is unwavering and we truly appreciate any and all donations that you can make. Thank you.
